I’m a full-fledged hakka moi

I made hakka abacus beads!

A typical hakka dish that is believed to be very difficult to make.

I believe in humanity more than ethnicity. I also introduce myself as a Malaysian when I go overseas, not Chinese and definitely not Hakka. Once in Hong Kong, a local ask me “So Sara, where is your family from?” and I answered “Kuala Lumpur”. She actually wanted to know from which part of China and what ethnicity (?).

But I do love culture (all types) and I do believe in retaining it especially through food. Besides, Hakka has the reputation of adaptability and hardwork, two values I admire. I don’t mind inheriting these genes and I do plan to make more of this dish. In fact, I’ve called my family to throw a Hakka theme party next month! (We had crab party this July ).  Can’t wait!
